On the 4th of October 2022, a workshop on UAV applications in the environmental sciences took place in Dresden and AIRlabs Austria was represented with a poster contribution by Dr. Gernot Seier.

The workshop was organised on the occasion of the book publication “UAVs for the Environmental Sciences – Methods and Applications” (freely accessible via doi.org/10.53186/1028514) in the run-up to the so-called three-country meeting of the German Society for Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Geoinformation (DGPF), the Austrian Society for Surveying and Geoinformation (OVG) and the Swiss Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (SGPF).

The content of this contribution deals with the entire processing sequence, starting with the planning of SfM (Structure from Motion) photogrammetric studies, through the implementation, e.g. via UAVs or terrestrially, to the evaluation, quality assessment and content-related discussion of the imaged object. With the advent of UAVs, SfM photogrammetric approaches are increasingly being used. However, many of the relevant procedures are not standardised and are not used uniformly. Therefore, as a proposed solution, we call for the most comprehensive documentation possible of the relevant details, in the form of a protocol. How both the professional community of different disciplines and commercially operating users can be persuaded to use such a protocol is the subject of ongoing research.
